How to Talk to Kids About Becoming Individuals Without Interference with Julie Lythcott-Haims

Special Guest: Julie Lythcott-Haims, When I asked my next guest to come back on the show and I wanted to know what she’d like to discuss this time because she has such interesting perspective and a way with words—and she said, she'd like to talk about how "kids don’t thrive when they’re raised like dogs on a leash who have to go a certain way to please their owner (parent)." You see my next guest did this amazing, extremely popular Ted Talk in 2016 entitled “How to Raise Successful Kids- without Over-Parenting” which has just about 7, 500, 000 views now. And in it she talks about how mapping out our children’s every move, check-listing their childhood so that they get into the right colleges and get the right jobs doesn’t actually make a successful, fulfilled person unless success is only moving up a preconceived and narrow ladder that may not actually feel like success for your child. How can we, as parents, drop the rope—or the leash—that is keeping our children from their passions, from their individuality, from their destiny—and how can we talk to our children about embracing who they are, learning who they want to be and willingly taking the steps to forge their own path? For that, we are turning to Julie Lythcott-Haims.

How to Answer Kids’ Toughest Questions about Sex with Logan Levkoff, PhD ReRelease

Special Guest: Logan Levkoff, PhD Parents, much to their surprise, have a great influence on their kids’ attitudes and values around sex, body exploration and relationships. While kids might tell you that they absolutely, positively do not want to talk to their parents (of all people) about sex or dating, the studies reveal something completely different. Perhaps you remember when we had Richard Weissbourd of Harvard University on the show and he told us that his research continually shows that kids want to have these conversations with their parents—and not just once- they want to have lots of conversations about this information over time. They want the knowledge and they want the guidance.

How to Talk to Kids about Beating the Odds, Acceptance & True Self Worth with Peter Mutabazi

Special guest: Peter Mutabazi. What is to come for a child who is told he is garbage? Worthless? Beaten to the ground? I have often said that children who have the love, kindness and acceptance of an adult—or several adults—can be the difference. As you might remember me saying, Search Institute found that many young people don’t feel that they have at least 3 key adults to turn to in a time of need and challenge. Our next guest had a very hard start to his life—abused by his father and watching his mother and siblings meet that same fate. He survived the streets of Kampala Uganda and, due to the potential that someone saw in him- wound up going to school and altering his life for the better in every possible way. My next guest will help us to understand how to talk to kids about acceptance and true self-worth. He has a remarkable story.

How to Talk to Kids about Death & Dying with Joe Primo

Special Guest: Joe Primo Having a conversation about death and dying is not typically a conversation people are excited to have with their kids. And yet, we all know it’s necessary. A friend of mine came over to me at a party the other day. She had just found out that her mother-in-law had stage 4 cancer. While dealing with her own whirlwind of emotions, knowing that I provide tips and scripts to have these tough conversations with kids, she asked me; “What do I tell the kids? What if they ask me if she’ll die? What do I say when she does?” The concept of dying can be scary, sad, confusing, angering and upsetting for many of us. Our own emotions, our concern about our children’s emotions- how they are going to take the news- how they are going to cope with life when someone they love dies- how might they grieve—what’s normal- these can make us worry about having the conversations in the first place. Not to mention, our confusion over what to say and how to say it can make this topic on how to talk to kids about death and dying- a real tough one.

How to Talk to Kids about Sex featuring Dina Alexander

Special Guest: Dina Alexander So who wants more information about how to have THE talk with their kids. You know the one. THE SEX TALK! This is one of those conversations that often makes us all squirm in our seats and yet, gotta have it. And remember, while you may not be talking to your kids about sex yet, you’ll need to talk about it at some point—and likely sooner than later, no matter what your family values are and what you personally think your children should or shouldn’t be doing. And for those of you who have already been in the thick of it—perhaps you’ve already had a discussion about privacy, your child’s body or sex itself – remember, it’s never one big talk, but a series of little ones, so this podcast can help provide you with one, two or three extra nuggets you might not have thought of yet when the topic comes up again. And you know it will! It always does.

How to Talk to Kids about the Power of Different with Dr. Gail Saltz

Special Guest: Dr. Gail Saltz Every parent wants his or her child to be happy and successful. As parents, we learn from many books, experts, our own parents that there is a formula for this—they get enough sleep, we feed them right, we send them to school, give them love and boundaries, make sure they do their homework, we put them in the right sports, get them involved with enrichment activities—the brain and body develops and our child will be successful. Of course, in practice, this is often not such a clear-cut picture. No child is the same as another. No brain is the same as another. And sometimes, when children don’t seem to be following the preconceived pattern that we expected, that we learned about, maybe that we hoped for, we might wonder how our child, who is different from the norm could become happy and successful. It turns out, as some have already discovered, that there is a power in being different and as parents, we can help cultivate, inspire and build upon that difference and that’s where the magic can happen. What magic you might wonder? What is the power of different? That’s why we are privileged to have our amazing guest, Dr. Gail Saltz, for today’s podcast episode.

Praise for Dr. Robyn

Wow! If your school district has not invited Dr. Robyn Silverman to speak with staff and parents about bullying, you and they are missing out on one of the best opportunities. Everyone was engaged and left with practical and implementable to use with children. They also learned that they and the school are a team working together to provide a safe environment for all students.

Dr. Silverman has a unique way of making this taboo subject simple and relevant to the particular audience. She is brilliant – her knowledge of the subject, her wit and her engaging style kept our attendees captivated. Robyn’s energy, conviction, and the undeniable truth of her message inspired so many to take action – to do something NOW to make a positive difference in the lives of girls. The preparation and care that Robyn takes to craft her powerful message specifically for the target audience is a mark of her professionalism and her commitment to girls

It was phenomenal!!!!  Dr. Robyn did a great job and we touched the lives (and changed the lives) for many young women! It was a very rewarding experience and we will definitely work with Robyn again for our McLean event and our Houston event.

In her energetic and engaging style, Dr. Silverman was able to touch upon vital issues that mothers and daughters are beginning to face in their child’s “tween” years. Her interactive exercises, “rewards” for audience participation, storytelling, and posed questions allowed both mothers and daughters to open up in a non threatening environment using effective communication tools in a fun and exciting way.

As the applause, laughter, participation, and evaluations reflected, the audience found this to be an excellent presentation, appreciating Dr. Silverman’s enthusiasm and easy going, accessible style. We had many people make a point to come over and tell us how much they loved the event and to thank us for a wonderful evening.

We were so glad to work with Dr. Silverman on this amazing night and look forward to working with her again in the future. We highly recommend her as a speaker for your next event.

On behalf of our students, staff, and parents, I would like to say “Thank You” for a wonderful presentation! Several kids expressed their thankfulness to me for having you come and speak to them, and the response from the parents was awesome. We will continue to educate, expect great things from our kids, and build a school of character! Thank you again.

Working with Dr. Robyn Silverman was an absolute joy. Not only did she ensure that her keynote speech suited the needs of our event, but her energy and excitement delivering it were unparalleled. She brought not only expertise and practical skills to our girls but also warmth and genuine care for her audience. Dr. Robyn’s presentation set the tone for the rest of the day, enabling girls to open up, learn, and have fun. It was clear that they had connected to her message and walked away inspired.

Dr. Silverman is awesome! She is an incredible speaker, and the sincerity and truth in her words are evident. After the presentation to the students, they expressed their appreciation with a standing ovation–which doesn’t happen often in junior high!

Dr. Robyn was amazing! Before the workshop officially started, she walked around and warmly welcomed each woman by shaking her hand and saying hello. I loved this…Dr. Robyn’s mix of personal anecdotes, eye-opening statistics, and disturbing images make the seminar funny, warm, emotional, and touching… Attending Dr. Robyn’s seminar empowered me to want to do even more. She empowered us to be the change we want for our girls, and instead of just leaving it at that, she gave us realistic steps we can take to counteract the negative and confusing messages presented to our girls on a daily basis. And I wasn’t the only one who was impressed. Our participants LOVED Dr. Robyn! They lined up in droves to buy her book, Good Girls Don’t Get Fat, have her sign it, and speak with her about their thoughts, opinions, and gratitude…I am working to collaborate with Dr. Robyn in the future!
