How to Talk to Kids When Something Bad Happens in the World with Dawn Huebner, PhD – ReRelease

Special guest: Dawn Heubner, Ph.D We all want our children to feel safe, secure and engaged in their lives. But when big, bad things happen in the world- from mass shootings to natural disasters to other tragedies detailed on the news and filtered through the adults at the restaurant, the neighbors on the street, the kids on the bus and friends at school- the world can feel a little less safe and secure for many of our children. How can we reserve our kids feelings of optimism, safety, security, strength and that inexplicable feeling that comes with a carefree childhood when scary things happen across the world, across the state or across the street? For this important topic, we turn a second time to past podcast guest, Dr. Dawn Huebner who you’ll remember from our discussion about worry and anxiety and how to help our kids when they worry too much—a great and helpful podcast episode that I urge you to listen to after this one. Dr. Dawn Huebner is a Clinical Psychologist and Parent Coach specializing in the treatment of anxiety. She is the author of 9 books for children including the perennial best seller, What to Do When You Worry Too Much, and more recent, Outsmarting Worry. Dr. Huebner's newest book, coming out THIS WEEK called Something Bad Happened, provides support for children learning about big bad things happening the world. Dr. Huebner has been featured on news and information outlets including the TODAY Show, CNN, Parent's Magazine and more. She maintains a private practice in Exeter, NH.

How to Talk to Kids About Differences and Inclusion with Beth Leipholtz

How do we talk to kids about children who have differences like spina bifida, fragile X syndrome, autism, or who are deaf or blind? Many times when children ask, out of curiosity, about a child’s difference that they see on the playground, at school or in a store, some adults are quick to shush that child out of fear of embarrassing the other child, the other parent, or themselves. It can catch us off-guard and we may not know what to say. In chapter 5 of my book, which is on talking to kids about diversity and inclusion, I highlight one of my very best friend’s children, Nate, who has Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus, and is now a teen who is happy to tell you about his differences—but it’s not always that way—so how do we talk to our children, when they DO have a difference, about that difference so that they aren’t ashamed and they know that it’s simply part of what makes them who they are-- but not all that they are. For this, we are talking to Beth Leipholtz.

How to Raise Resilient, Self-Reliant, and Secure Kids in an Age of Anxiety with Dr. Harold Koplewicz – Rerelease

Dr. Robyn Silverman speaks to Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, founding president and medical director at the Child Mind Institute and author of the new book, The Scaffold Effect, on the How to Talk to Kids about Anything podcast.

How to Talk to Kids about having meaningful conversations that matter with Celeste Headlee

Special Guest: Celeste Headlee Celeste Headlee is the host of "On Second Thought" at Georgia Public Broadcasting in Atlanta and has been a host and correspondent for NPR and PRI since 2006. She is the author of the book, We Need to Talk: How to Have Conversations That Matter (Harper Wave, September 19), a practical guide to the lost art of conversation. Celeste’s TEDx Talk sharing 10 ways to have a better conversation was listed as one of the most watched TED Talks in 2016 (CNBC) and named the #1 must-watch TED Talk by Glassdoor (with over 11 million total views to date.)  Being able to have productive conversations is a skill—and it’s a skill, built on a series of other skills from being assertive to listening to ensuring that we were heard correctly and yes, that we have heard and understood correctly what others are saying. These days, with so much communication relying on electronic screens and emojis, the art of conversation may be at risk. And that’s a scary thought. To put ourselves in the frame of mind of taking in the importance of good conversation skills, just think of what happens when poor communication happens—people get the wrong idea, mistakes are made, feelings are hurt and stuff does not get done in the right way. And when conversation is clear and strong and good- progress is made, we feel understood and connected- truly, it can make all the difference.

What to do (and what not to do) to become mentally strong parents with Amy Morin, LCSW

Special Guest: Amy Morin Amy Morin a psychotherapist and the international bestselling author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do. Her forthcoming book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do, goes on sale September 19. Amy also teaches at Northeastern University and she’s a regular contributor to Forbes, Inc., Verywell, and Psychology Today. Her advice has been featured by numerous media outlets including Oprah.com, Parents, Business Insider, Success Magazine, and Fox News and she stars in a RedBull TV show called Visions of Greatness.  Mentally strong people have good habits, make informed choices and persevere even when the going gets tough. But what habits have mentally strong people dropped to make room for personal growth and meaningful gain? Many people have told Amy Morin, who authored the blockbuster “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do” (which you can hear about here LINK), that they wished they had learned these 13 things to avoid earlier in life—and how, as parents, could they be a better example to their kids? How could they actively instill positive habits (and avoid instilling negative habits) in their children that could compromise their mental strength? This podcast has the answers.

Praise for Dr. Robyn

Wow! If your school district has not invited Dr. Robyn Silverman to speak with staff and parents about bullying, you and they are missing out on one of the best opportunities. Everyone was engaged and left with practical and implementable to use with children. They also learned that they and the school are a team working together to provide a safe environment for all students.

Dr. Silverman has a unique way of making this taboo subject simple and relevant to the particular audience. She is brilliant – her knowledge of the subject, her wit and her engaging style kept our attendees captivated. Robyn’s energy, conviction, and the undeniable truth of her message inspired so many to take action – to do something NOW to make a positive difference in the lives of girls. The preparation and care that Robyn takes to craft her powerful message specifically for the target audience is a mark of her professionalism and her commitment to girls

It was phenomenal!!!!  Dr. Robyn did a great job and we touched the lives (and changed the lives) for many young women! It was a very rewarding experience and we will definitely work with Robyn again for our McLean event and our Houston event.

In her energetic and engaging style, Dr. Silverman was able to touch upon vital issues that mothers and daughters are beginning to face in their child’s “tween” years. Her interactive exercises, “rewards” for audience participation, storytelling, and posed questions allowed both mothers and daughters to open up in a non threatening environment using effective communication tools in a fun and exciting way.

As the applause, laughter, participation, and evaluations reflected, the audience found this to be an excellent presentation, appreciating Dr. Silverman’s enthusiasm and easy going, accessible style. We had many people make a point to come over and tell us how much they loved the event and to thank us for a wonderful evening.

We were so glad to work with Dr. Silverman on this amazing night and look forward to working with her again in the future. We highly recommend her as a speaker for your next event.

On behalf of our students, staff, and parents, I would like to say “Thank You” for a wonderful presentation! Several kids expressed their thankfulness to me for having you come and speak to them, and the response from the parents was awesome. We will continue to educate, expect great things from our kids, and build a school of character! Thank you again.

Working with Dr. Robyn Silverman was an absolute joy. Not only did she ensure that her keynote speech suited the needs of our event, but her energy and excitement delivering it were unparalleled. She brought not only expertise and practical skills to our girls but also warmth and genuine care for her audience. Dr. Robyn’s presentation set the tone for the rest of the day, enabling girls to open up, learn, and have fun. It was clear that they had connected to her message and walked away inspired.

Dr. Silverman is awesome! She is an incredible speaker, and the sincerity and truth in her words are evident. After the presentation to the students, they expressed their appreciation with a standing ovation–which doesn’t happen often in junior high!

Dr. Robyn was amazing! Before the workshop officially started, she walked around and warmly welcomed each woman by shaking her hand and saying hello. I loved this…Dr. Robyn’s mix of personal anecdotes, eye-opening statistics, and disturbing images make the seminar funny, warm, emotional, and touching… Attending Dr. Robyn’s seminar empowered me to want to do even more. She empowered us to be the change we want for our girls, and instead of just leaving it at that, she gave us realistic steps we can take to counteract the negative and confusing messages presented to our girls on a daily basis. And I wasn’t the only one who was impressed. Our participants LOVED Dr. Robyn! They lined up in droves to buy her book, Good Girls Don’t Get Fat, have her sign it, and speak with her about their thoughts, opinions, and gratitude…I am working to collaborate with Dr. Robyn in the future!
