At younger ages, kids should diversify their talents and their ability to grow and mature just like they do in school. If we just put our kids in math class, what kind of students would they be? The same goes for sports. Allow kids to develop well-rounded skill sets.”
.
So often parents will push their children to specialize in a sport very early in life. This can be problematic for several reasons.
.
It can be a source of early burnout
The children can lack opportunity to try other activities they might love more
There is a higher rate of injury
Young children need to learn, develop and grow by exposure to many activities
Kids need to gain different skill sets- early specialization can be an impediment
.
Of course there are unusual circumstances where children become elite early on because the sport necessitates early commitment and performance. The child would need to be completely onboard with this idea. There is a great deal of sacrifice that goes into early specialization for the whole family!
.
Diversifying sports exposure can be a wonderful way to help your #children grow and develop, learn social and physical skills and…let’s not forget…have fun!
